Surveying

Location, location, location… It’s all about location!

Essentially surveying is the process by which features associated with the land are located and identified. We are so used to looking at two-dimensional maps which closely resemble the land surface that we commonly forget that the earth is round. This roundness, or curvature, results in portions of land that are almost, but not quite square. This curvature coupled with the ever-changing surface of the earth is why surveyors are still needed today.

Surveying began with people using ropes and stings to measure distances between known features on the ground. The knotted rope method was how the pyramids were laid out and constructed. This worked well on a small scale but when applied to larger areas and significant distances the accuracy of these tools would become greatly reduced. As surveying evolved and better technologies came about the profession transitioned to chains and tapes and began using optical equipment to measure angles. Today’s surveyor uses mechanized robotic and global positioning systems to accomplish those same goals of precision and accuracy.

WestSound Engineering has a fully functional surveying department, which will employ robotics, GPS, and conventional survey techniques as necessary to provide the most precise and accurate representation of your land as requested.
